Features and Options
The Discus-2c is Schempp-Hirth's newest glider optimized for flight in either 18meter or 15 meter configuration. On
the 16.09.2004 it was finally ready! The head of the development team,
Next to fly was Tilo Holighaus and until
sunset, various members of the Schempp-Hirth team took to the air. All of them
were united in their opinion: This aircraft is an absolutely successful
development with impressive flight characteristics. Beginning with a responsive
roll rate and agility in all axis, lively acceleration, to harmless stall
characteristics. The new outer wing with the newly developed Maughmer winglet
caters for perfect flight characteristics including thermalling and right back
to the extreme low end of the speed range. To achieve these characteristics on
the first attempt in a new development is due to the effective and creative
engineering team led by Dipl. Ing. Helmut Treiber. We are happy with this
masterpiece. An aircraft which can be flown throughout a wing loading range of 30 - 50 kg/m2 (6.3 - 10.2 lb/ft2), which has a glide ratio comparable to the earlier open class gliders and which possesses such easy flying characteristics, deserves this recognition. The patience of all those who have waited for this 18m-aircraft has been well worth it.
