From the perspective of a long-time Ventus (A & CA) and more recently, Discus CS pilot, the Discus 2 exceeds every expectation for handling. Having just flown the newer model five times as of April 2003, there is a significantly improved difference when compared to the already outstanding handling of the Discus.
Pitch and roll control is noticeably faster. The D2 transitions from thermal speed to high-speed cruise mode with much less input than the earlier Discus. Pitch attitude at 100 knots more closely resembles a 15 Meter “view over the nose” than that of a standard class ship. Roll inputs are quick and lead to the desired bank angle with minimal effort, almost as if the aircraft wants to fly itself. Having flown with winglets on the earlier Discus, the factory standard D2 winglets have also resulted in making a great glider even better.
My opportunities to date for flying against other gliders have been limited, however, a couple of ridge opportunities with other 15 meter gliders would suggest that in the 100 knot range and below, the Discus 2 is an equal or better to any 15 meter or standard class glider.
The Discus 2 does fly appreciably more nose high in the
thermal and landing phase of flight. While this was not a factor
in thermal flight, I would suggest that any D2 pilot pay close attention
to airspeed vs pitch attitude on landings. (as one should on any glider).
